Things that every Mum needs to know about Dental Care for young children and babies.

From 0 to 6 months of age

Babies that are exclusively breastfed do not require any other liquids to drink.
Bottle fed babies may be given cooled boiled water to quench their thirst.

From 6 to 12 months of age

As babies start to become weaned, they can start to drink from a cup with a sipper lid, these are widely available. These cups are ideal as they start to teach the baby to sip instead of sucking.

From 12 months onwards

At about a year old some babies will already be able to drink from an unlidded open plastic beaker or cup, with your help. Baby should always be sitting down when drinking and not running around, this creates a good habit for the future.

As your child gets older water or milk is best but if you choose to give your little one fruit juice or fruit flavoured drinks, try to dilute them well with water, about one part juice to ten parts water. If this is given at meal times, it should be in an open beaker.

Children should not be given a bottle of milk at night to go to sleep with, as this can cause tooth decay. Teeth need to be brushed after the last drink at night. If you child does wake up in the night, just give water to drink.

Drinks between meals should ideally be water or milk from an open beaker. Sugary drinks should only be given at meal times. If your child likes fruit juices, the acid in the mouth following the drink, can be neutralised by eating some cheese.

Teach your toddler to brush their teeth in the morning and before bed, and dont forget to visit the Dentist. Here at My Brilliant Smile Dental Centre we encourage mums to bring their children in, to familiarise them with going to the Dentist. We make dentistry fun for children, we will even give you a plastic mouth mirror so that you can play going to the dentist at home too. This all helps to ensure that your childs teeth get the best start in life and enables your child to start developing excellent dental care habits that will be with them for the rest of their lives.
