Putting ourselves in your shoes these are the questions and answers that are important to know, before considering this option for treatment.

How do teeth get stained and discoloured?

Teeth become stained and discoloured over a period of time for many reasons namely our diet, the types of food we eat and drinks such as wine, tea or coffee, smoking or medications taken as an adult or child. Other things such as the formation of the teeth themselves and chemicals are far less common causes. Staining can be on the outside of the tooth as well as internal to the tooth.

How long does whitening last?

It is a common myth that whitening lasts forever-it doesn’t. Depending on your lifestyle and diet, at some point without a maintenance programme they will gradually become stained again. However, simply topping up your whitening is very simple and can even be done at home, without the same costs as the initial treatment. This top up could for example be done yearly or every six months.

What about my fillings, crowns or veneers?

This is a very important question as whitening will have no effect on dental crowns, fillings or veneers.

Is it a safe and predictable treatment?

If carried out by a dental professional using the correct procedures, with the latest products that are CE Marked, it is safe and mostly predictable.

Is tooth whitening for everybody?

The simple answer is no, you need to be dentally fit and secondly it depends on the result that you are looking for. Other treatments for example cosmetic veneers might in some circumstances be more suitable.

How much whiter can my teeth get?

Several manufacturers produce cardboard or plastic colour guides that you hold up to your existing teeth, to give you a colour guide. These are quite frankly very poor indicators and as such pointless. At your initial free consultation the colour of your existing teeth should be measured by an electronic device, only once you have that reading can you answer that question.

I have heard about whitening in one hour or even less which is the best?

To answer that question more fully see below. But first let me ask you a question, what’s the point in having a whitening treatment, if you have to convince yourself that’s it’s made a difference, when those around you can’t see any change?

The question really should be what would give me the best result and last the longest, whilst being the safest for my gums and which treatment would be the most comfortable.

I have read in several magazines that people have sensitive teeth afterwards, how painful is it?

Sensitivity has been and still is an issue with the cheaper products, especially the products you can by online. What we are talking about here are professional products that the public cannot buy themselves. Some products use very high concentrations of gel which increase sensitivity, they can even burn the lips or gums. The best systems used now have a new approach, it’s in fact the opposite, very low concentrations. Sensitivity is then not an issue and can be dealt with immediately if required.

The whitening systems using lights and lasers are more advanced?

Again that’s old technology where lights or lasers were used to boost the reaction and speed things up. The latest systems have moved away from lights and lasers, why? - Two reasons, one they didn’t make much difference and two the technology has moved on. I can think of nothing worse than having to sit with my mouth open for about an hour, whilst at the same time not being able to move a muscle as a light is millimeters away from my lips. Add to that the quite claustrophobic feeling as all the gums have to be covered to protect them, no not my cup of tea!

Incidentally if you sit with your mouth open for an hour, your teeth do dry out and will look lighter! None of that is required nowadays.

I heard that tooth whitening is illegal?

There is currently a strange situation that exists, as the products that work, do not fit into the category for this kind of treatment. i.e. the level of concentration of the gels, exceed the European directive. However although the products that we have are CE Marked, many of them are not. The General Dental Council here in the UK has been so concerned about the possible danger to the public that it has prosecuted people who are not registered dental care professionals. As you can imagine the last thing you want is blistered lips or gums, so steer clear of any internet products now matter how cheap they are. Seek the advice of a registered dental care professional.

A new patient examination normally takes more than 30 minutes to complete, it involves a head and neck exam, as well as an examination of all the teeth, soft tissues, salivary glands, tongue and cheeks. A comprehensive, confidential, medical and dental history form has to be recorded and discussed. Also all the existing natural teeth and any fillings, crowns etc have also to be charted and recorded. Sometimes radiographs have to be taken as a diagnostic aid, however only when required and not routinely. So you can see it just would not be possible to provide this for free.
